SWEDEN SUMMER MEET 2024 HELD IN ASKERSUND, SWEDEN 18th - 21st JULY 2024
We
left Sydney on 12 July and by accident found ourselves on the first
direct flight from Australia to Paris.
THURS 18 JULY Askersund is 251km west of Stockholm and 260km east of Gotesburg, basically the centre of Sweden if you dismiss the frozen north We arrived by train in Hallsberg . There is no train to Askersund. There is a bus every hour so we catch the bus around midday and arrive in Askersund with enough time to have lunch in the town before check-in at the Great Western Hotel at 1500. At 1800 there was a get together and we are reunited with Jorgen, a friend who drove us around in his 58 Golden Hawk at the European Meet in 2018. He offered to drive us around this year.
FRIDAY 19 JULY We head south to Forsviks Bruk. We have no idea what we did at this place. Photos, videos and checking the website doesn’t help. Next we head north to Tiveden and lunch at the pub. The road crosses an opening bridge, which opens frequently to let boats pass. It is part of a canal that links Stockholm & Gotesberg. There is a small museum with a history of the canal. You can actually sail a boat right across Sweden.
SATURDAY 20 JULY We head south in the Golden Hawk to our first stop at the Thomas Moped & Model Railway Museum. Great collection of motorcycles, mopeds and other bazaar machinery. The model railway was quite interesting. Next door was the Hammars Brewery. The door is open, no staff in attendance. You just walk in, pick your purchases and swipe your card at the check out. I don’t think the local Dan Murphys will adopt this method. The next stop is Stjernsund Castle where the cars were allowed to park in the courtyard. The tour of the castle was interesting with a great history. We got to see the ground floor plus the basement. I ask about the top floor. Come back next year was the answer. They alternate between the ground & first floor one year and the ground floor & the basement the next year. The castle, as they call it in Sweden is my idea of a big house, nothing like a castle you would tour in England. Back at Meet Headquarters, after a mini car show we have a 3 course meal and farewell speeches.

SUNDAY 21 JULY While the bus is every hour during the week, there is only 4 buses on Sunday. We checked out of Meet Headquarters with the intention of catching the 1205 bus, but Jorgen offers to drive us to Hallsberg as it was on his way home. We arrive at Hallsberg 2 hours earlier than planned so catch an earlier train to Stockholm.
EUROPEAN NATIONAL MEET 2024 HELD IN OSLO NORWAY 7th - 11st AUGUST 2024
After the Swedish Meet we used our rail pass and ferries, to visit Finland, Estonia, back to Sweden and then Norway
WEDNESDAY 7TH AUGUST OSLO‑SUNDVOLDEN: Bus from City bus station. 2 tickets for the 41km journey costs A$59.04. The price of everything in Norway is ridiculous, probably due to GST being 25%. Bus drops us within 100 mtrs of the Sundvolden Hotel, Meet Headquarters. Beautiful large modern hotel with an original part (now the restaurant) dating back to 1648. Sitting in a valley overlooking a fiord. Stunning. Lot of Studebakers in the car park. Meet and greet at 8pm. Buy 2 x 400ml draft beers. Costs A$33.44. We give up drinking..
THURSDAY 8TH AUGUST SUNDVOLDEN: Bus tour to Oslo with a guided tour of Parliament House. Very interesting. The building dates back to 1812, the date that modern Norway started. After that it is a visit to old Oslo airport, which has been turned into various museums. We visit the car museum and they have a couple of interesting Studebakers, a 1963 R2 Avanti, a 1964 R2 GT Hawk and a Cord.

The tour of the air museum included a visit to the top of the control tower. It took a while to climb the 6 story spiral staircase. Old age is fun. There is a lift but the guide informs us that it has not worked since 1992. Arrival back at the hotel, and I think there may be an answer to the beer problem. There is a supermarket across the street and if it sells beer & ice, we are in luck. They do, so we buy a 4 pack of 500ml cans for A$24.64. The same amount of beer at the pub would cost over A$80. Our luck holds until we go to pay. Sorry sir but you can't buy beer after 8pm. Some of the European countries have strange laws. Another dry night.
FRIDAY 9TH AUGUST SUNDVOLDEN: Jorgen has not turned up, so we need a lift. Morten & Asa Randi offer us a lift. They have a 1950 Commander Land Cruiser, a 4‑door sedan with long wheelbase. Great room in the back seat. Better than the Golden Hawk. First stop was a large park full of art, situated in an old logging camp. Very interesting. Next stop was a car museum. Not just a car museum but the Eight Amcars Club (EAC) Museum. Started in the 1970's, the club is aimed at the collection and restoration of post‑WW2 cars of these brands: DeSoto, Henry J, Hudson, Kaiser/Frazer, Nash, Packard, Studebaker and Willys. All eight brands share in a common destiny of being non‑competitive to the majors like Ford and GM. The museum features a 1950's American dinner, where we had lunch. After lunch it was time to inspect the museum. They have about 40 cars on display, most fully restored, registered and running, the place was incredible. There as probably 25 Studebakers, Packards and Stude/Packards.
One of the owners asked if we have been down to the basement. There is a basement I asked? Down the stairs are another 60 cars. This place is mad. More Studebakers here than at the Meet or even at The Studebaker National Museum in South Bend. Most are in original condition or restored. A few are under restoration and a few more must be parts cars.
I find out from another owner that they have another property with 200 more cars under cover. So if you are ever in Norway, make sure you visit or else Google the EAC museum website.
We get back to the supermarket before 8pm.

SAT 10TH AUGUST SUNDVOLDEN: Back in the 1950 Commander we proceed to the world's biggest ski jump and a group photo was taken of the cars under the jump. Then onto the Cobalt mine. Lunch first, then a tour of the mine. We are underground for over 90 minutes. They supply you with coats as the temperature in the mine is 3C. Unbelievable. The mine has miles of tunnels and the rock is like steel. No lining of the tunnel required. It was all built by hand!!! Banquet night back at Meet Headquarters.

SUN 11TH AUGUST SUNDVOLDEN‑OSLO‑GOTESBURG: We have breakfast and say goodbye to a lot of new friends. Bus turns up on time and we have a quick trip back to Oslo. Surprising, on a Sunday the fare is only A$26.33. I have no idea why, and I didn’t ask. From Oslo we then travelled to Poland via Berlin, visiting Warsaw, Krakow & Katowice. Fascinating country. From Katowice we travelled to Prague in the Czech Republic, then through Germany to Brussels for a few days then back to Paris.
